OEM and Aftermarket Screens                                                          WHATS THE DIFFERENCE?

7/21/2018

There is some confusion in the repair industry regarding the quality of the iPhone screen replacements. Are all iPhone screens the same quality? The answer is no. Screens can vary in the quality and we want to help educate the customer so you can make the correct buying decision.

What is OEM(Original screen)?
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacture. These are the same LCD that come out of the Apple manufacturing warehouse. True OEM screens come from Apple and other Apple authorized dealers(Best Buy).

What is aftermarket?
Aftermarket screens are built by 3rd party manufacturers. A familiar analogy will be regarding your car parts to get it fixed. Aftermarket will get the job done, but it is arguable that the quality won’t be as good as the original.

What is the difference between OEM and Aftermarket?
Well first off, lets just say that within aftermarket screens, there is varying quality. But for the sake of simplicity, we are going to write about the screens we use, which are the highest quality aftermarkets screens you can buy(yes, other repair companies purchase less quality screens to save money).

Differences:
  • Glass hardness-The original screen will have a slightly harder glass
  • 3D touch- is more sensitive on Original screen
  • Color- Here is an aftermarket and original screen side by side. Each phone is an iPhone 6s Plus. Most people don't notice the difference, but for some it is significant.

What does Phone Pals Offer?
Your iPhone screen has two different glass layers. The first layer is a protective glass covering. The second is the LCD itself, which displays the image on your phone. Most of the time, only the top glass breaks. Which means, the original(OEM) LCD is still in great condition. At this point, you have two options:
  1. Replace the lcd and cracked glass with an aftermarket screen.
  2. Replace the cracked glass while keeping the original display, this is called refurbishing the screen.

Now since Phone Pals Repair is mobile, and the refurbishing equipment is heavy and expensive, we won’t be able to refurbish your specific screen at your location. Instead, we use screens that have already been refurbished and tested to swap out your lcd screen.

Still Confused?
Here are some questions you may ask yourself to guide your buying decision.

-Do i Break screens, a lot? Aftermarket screens are less expensive.

-Am I obsessed with photos and instagram? You may prefer the better quality original screen.

-Is this my children's screen? have they already broken 3 others? Aftermarket is cheaper and will save you money.

Is the 3d touch important to me? This is when you press hard on it and another button pops up. If it is important go original. If you could care less, go aftermarket.

Am I on a Budget? Aftermarket is less expensive

Am I trading my phone in? Aftermarket is less expensive

do I like the best product available? Original

Thanks for explaining that aftermarket and original screens will have slightly different color displays, which is an issue for some people but not for others. I dropped my phone this morning and cracked the screen pretty badly, so I want to figure out the best way to have it repaired. I'm glad I read your article because you helped me feel more prepared to choose the right screen once I find a phone repair shop.
